Post Doc in Climate-Resilient Companion Cropping (100%)

Prof. Matthias Erb · University of Bern, Switzerland

The Research Section Biotic Interactions (Prof. Matthias Erb), University of Bern, Switzerland, invites applications for a 100% postdoctoral position in chemical ecology and climate-resilient companion cropping. We seek a researcher with demonstrated expertise in companion cropping and chemical ecology who is keen to connect mechanistic insights into plant interactions with sustainable agriculture.

How can interactions between plants help crops withstand climate extremes? Within the Oeschger Centre for Climate Change Research (OCCR) cluster on Climate Change, Biodiversity and Ecosystem Stability, we will combine chemical ecology, community ecology, soil science and crop physiology to design and test companion-cropping systems that support crop productivity, biodiversity and soil health under drought and heat. You will investigate how ecological theory and chemically mediated plant interactions, including plant-plant signalling, can inform the design of crop mixtures. Focusing initially on maize and its companion species, you will coordinate experimental design and establish complementary greenhouse, field and mesocosm experiments at the University of Bern. Together with collaborating groups, you will assess crop performance and pest resistance, water use, associated biodiversity, soil carbon and soil biotic interactions under ambient conditions and simulated climate extremes. You will also organize an interdisciplinary workshop on the resilience of ecosystem services, contribute to a conceptual synthesis, lead scientific publications, and help supervise MSc research. Working closely with OCCR colleagues and partners at Agroscope and FiBL, you will connect the experimental findings to agronomic field trials and help develop future research collaborations. The position is hosted by the Erb group and involves close collaboration across the OCCR cluster.

What we expect

  • A PhD in chemical ecology, plant biology, plant ecology, agroecology or a related field, completed by the start of the position, with a proven publication track record.
  • Demonstrated expertise in chemical ecology, with a strong interest in plant-plant interactions, community ecology and climate change. Relevant experience may include plant volatiles, root exudates, specialized metabolites, chemical analysis, ecological bioassays and community ecology.
  • Strong skills in experimental design and quantitative data analysis, and the ability to establish and conduct plant experiments.
  • An interest in integrating mechanistic plant research with community ecology, climate resilience and sustainable crop production. Experience in intercropping, plant stress physiology, plant-insect interactions, soil ecology or greenhouse and field experimentation is an advantage.
  • Evidence of original scientific contributions, together with strong scientific writing and communication skills in English.
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively, coordinate activities across disciplines, and contribute to student mentoring.

What we offer

  • A 100% postdoctoral position for two years, with the possibility of a one-year extension.
  • An interdisciplinary research environment in the Erb group and the OCCR, connecting chemical ecology with biodiversity research, soil science and climate-resilient agriculture.
  • Access to complementary greenhouse, field and mesocosm research systems and opportunities to collaborate with Agroscope and FiBL.
  • Personalized scientific mentoring and opportunities to develop an independent research profile, lead publications and contribute to future funding proposals.
  • Remuneration according to University of Bern salary regulations.
