Post Doc in Digital Plant Phenotyping (80-100%)
Prof. Matthias Erb · University of Bern, Switzerland
We are recruiting a plant scientist for an 80-100% postdoc in digital plant phenotyping at the University of Bern, Switzerland. The work combines plant experiments with computational biology. You will work with the Biotic Interactions Group (Prof. Matthias Erb) and the Computer Vision Group (Prof. Paolo Favaro).
The ongoing Plant 3D Reconstruction project develops methods to measure plant growth and traits from 3D models generated from smartphone videos. It links digital phenotyping with chemical ecology. You will grow plants, collect images and measure plant traits. You will use these measurements to develop and test models that estimate traits from 3D plant models. You will also integrate this work with research on volatile dynamics to study links between plant architecture and chemical signalling. The work is split equally between plant experiments and computational analysis, with support from computer vision and data science specialists. You will analyse results and contribute to scientific publications.
What we expect
- A PhD in plant sciences, biology or a related field, with a research background in plant science. The PhD must be completed by the start date.
- Experience growing plants, running controlled experiments and measuring plant traits.
- Skills in experimental design, data management and statistical analysis.
- An interest in computational biology and a willingness to learn methods for estimating plant traits from 3D models.
- Evidence of original scientific work and clear writing and communication in English.
- Ability to organize your work, work independently and collaborate with researchers from other fields.
What we offer
- An 80-100% postdoctoral appointment until 31 December 2028.
- An equal split between plant experiments and computational work.
- Access to plant growth facilities and support from specialists in computer vision and data analysis.
- Scientific mentoring and opportunities to learn computational methods and lead publications.
- Salary according to University of Bern regulations.
How to apply
Submit one PDF containing your CV, a short motivation letter, your three main achievements, and contact details for two academic references. In the letter, describe your plant science experience and your interest in computational biology and this project. The file must not exceed 10 MB. The position is open until filled. The start date is by agreement. The appointment ends on 31 December 2028.
